LARRY OSTEMA JOINS HORACK TALLEY AS "GREEN" PRACTICE LEADER
Charlotte, July 20, 2007: In a move acknowledging Charlotte’s growing LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) interests and the “green” movement in commercial real estate, Horack Talley has hired an attorney with more than fifteen years of real estate and renewable energy experience to begin a sustainability practice in the region.
“Sustainability is about gaining energy efficiency without loss of services,” maintains Ostema. “People often think energy efficiency means giving up something – walking to work or having the lights off. These days, it’s about having all the conveniences we’re used to, but using a fraction of the energy. Sustainability creates value in terms of cost savings and higher real estate values.”
Larry Ostema’s practice comprises contract law, corporate law, real estate law, and other disciplines. Horack Talley’s clients will now have access to the tax incentives being offered to developers. Ostema will also be working with start-ups and larger corporations forming businesses to create “green” products, and putting venture capital interests together with entrepreneurs in alternative energy.
“Alternative ways of generating energy, like solar and wind, are very different than they were twenty years ago,” continues Ostema. “For instance, micro-windmills can be put into traffic lights at shopping malls, making them self-sustaining. Windmills no longer need to be huge or noisy.” Mr. Ostema specializes in sorting through available technologies to select the strongest entries, those with short-term as well as long-term return on investment.
Mr. Ostema’s clients include high-tech and emerging growth companies working with venture capital and project financing, consortia forming “green” funds, a developer of carbon credits and developers seeking tax and other incentives being offered by municipal and private funds.
Mr. Ostema received his B.A., cum laude, from Amherst College and his J.D. from The College of William & Mary, Marshall Wythe School of Law. He was the Managing Editor of the William & Mary Law Review.
Mr. Ostema is Special Counsel to Horack Talley, as he is currently licensed to practice law only in Colorado. His North Carolina application is on file and is pending the action of the North Carolina Board of Law Examiners.
