BREAKING GROUND ON HORACK TALLEY HABITAT HOUSE
Charlotte: Construction of the Horack Talley Habitat for Humanity house began on this beautiful sunny Saturday. Working alongside the new homeowners, attorneys and staff from Charlotte’s 75-year old law firm hefted hammers and nailed framing members into structural components for the new home northwest of uptown.
“It was a logical choice,” said Smithy Curry, managing partner of Horack Talley. “Horack Talley is deeply rooted in this community. Our history of commercial and residential real estate law made the Habitat for Humanity House a good fit.”
This spring, the firm had a choice between celebrating its 75th anniversary with a conventional client gala or building a Habitat for Humanity home.
“Our shareholders overwhelmingly chose to build something of lasting value in the community,” concluded Curry.
Horack Talley’s roots are deep in the Charlotte area. Over the years the firm has been involved in many noteworthy cases. Attorneys have argued in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, have served as president of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Bar and president of N.C. Bar Association, and have served on the Charlotte City Council and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board. One was elected Mayor of Asheville. One Horack Talley shareholder became president & CEO of Duke Energy, then called Duke Power Company.
Horack Talley has donated all funding for the home, and is providing most of the volunteer construction help as well. The home-building team comprises attorneys, paralegals, and administrative staff and their spouses who will donate their labor to its construction over the next two months.
